Artist Statement
Gnar Giant is the pseudonym for Connecticut based strange artist-person Joe Kazer, celebrated for his captivating blend of lowbrow and pop surrealism. A semi-graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, his work lives comfortably at the intersection of alien and familiar, whimsical and yet disconcerting.
Drawing inspiration from underground comics, vintage pop culture, and children’s television programs, Kazer creates works that challenge the expectations of fine art, and the criteria for what society dictates has value.
His signature style features vibrant colors and intricate cross hatching, his illustrations consistently abstract and cartoonish. This Pop-Up serves as his first independent physical show, featuring his recent series of wood panel acrylic paintings, skate decks, and associated merchandise.
